Product Design
A Level Product Design is a creative and practical course that combines technical knowledge, innovation and problem-solving. Students will explore how products are designed, developed and manufactured, gaining an understanding of the relationship between design, technology and engineering. The course encourages students to think creatively and critically, developing innovative solutions to real-world challenges while considering sustainability, functionality, aesthetics and user needs.
Throughout the course, students will develop a wide range of practical and technical skills, including sketching, technical drawing, computer-aided design (CAD), modelling, prototyping and manufacturing. They will learn how to select and work with different materials, understand modern manufacturing processes and use specialist equipment and technologies to turn their ideas into functional products.
Students will also explore the wider impact of design on society and the environment, examining how designers and manufacturers respond to changing consumer needs, technological developments and sustainability challenges. They will develop an understanding of the design process, from initial research and concept development through to testing, evaluation and refinement.
A key part of the course involves undertaking an independent design and make project, where students identify a genuine problem or user need and develop their own solution. This provides an opportunity to demonstrate creativity, technical knowledge and practical skills while developing independence, project management and analytical thinking.
A Level Product Design is ideal for students who enjoy creativity, problem-solving and hands-on learning. It provides an excellent foundation for further study in areas such as Product Design, Industrial Design, Engineering, Architecture and Manufacturing.
Students completing this qualification will be well prepared for progression to university, degree apprenticeships and careers across the creative, design, engineering and technology industries.
