A Level Further Mathematics is designed for students with a strong aptitude and passion for mathematics. It extends and deepens the content studied in A Level Mathematics, introducing more advanced and abstract concepts.

This course is particularly suited to students who enjoy tackling complex problems, thinking logically and exploring mathematics at a higher level. It is highly regarded by leading universities, especially for mathematically demanding degree courses.

  • Course Content

Students study advanced Pure Mathematics topics such as complex numbers, matrices, further calculus and differential equations. In addition, students complete applied options which may include Mechanics, Statistics or Discrete Mathematics, depending on the exam board. These modules allow students to explore specialised areas of mathematics in greater depth and apply advanced techniques to solve sophisticated problems. The course builds on A Level Mathematics and requires strong algebraic fluency and mathematical confidence.
  • Skills Gained

Students develop: Advanced analytical and abstract reasoning High-level problem-solving skills Mathematical precision and logical argument The ability to construct and communicate complex proofs Confidence working independently on challenging material Advanced modelling and interpretation skills Further Mathematics strengthens resilience, intellectual curiosity and depth of understanding.
  • Pathways

A Level Further Mathematics is highly recommended for students intending to study: Mathematics Engineering Physics Computer Science Economics Actuarial Science It is particularly valued by competitive universities and supports applications to mathematically rigorous degree programmes.
  • Assessment Method

Assessment is through externally examined written papers at the end of the two-year course. Papers assess both Pure and optional applied modules. There is no coursework component. Questions require extended problem-solving, mathematical proof and detailed reasoning, reflecting the advanced nature of the qualification.
